Executive Director’s Blog – September "Why Fundraising Matters More Than Ever"

Did you know that the Community Dining Room receives no state or federal funding? Every meal we serve, every bag of groceries we provide, every connection we make with a neighbor in need — it all happens because of the generosity of individuals, foundations, and corporations who believe in our mission.

Fundraising isn’t just something we do on the side — it’s how we keep our doors open and our services growing. Without it, we simply could not meet the needs of the shoreline community. And those needs are growing.

Climate change is impacting food security in ways we can all feel — from unpredictable weather patterns that disrupt farming, to rising grocery costs that strain already-tight household budgets. At the same time, more families and individuals are turning to us for help. Our dining room is busier, our takeout meals are in higher demand, and our pantry shelves empty faster than ever before.

We have always been here to provide nourishment, dignity, and connection — but meeting the continual increase in demand takes resources. That’s why fundraising events, donor support, and grant funding from generous partners are not optional extras — they are the foundation that allows us to serve.

Every dollar raised helps us keep the lights on, buy fresh ingredients, maintain our kitchen equipment, and staff our programs. It ensures we can respond quickly to new challenges and continue offering all our services at no cost to those who need them most.

This fall, you’ll see us continue to launch campaigns and events designed to bring in the funds necessary to sustain our mission. When you donate, attend an event, or encourage your employer to support us, you are making an investment in the well-being of your community.

We may not receive government funding, but thanks to our donors, corporate sponsors, and foundation partners, we continue to provide hope — one meal, one connection, and one act of kindness at a time.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being part of this work. Together, we can meet the growing needs and face the challenges ahead.
